Annually, Complex Weavers offers a merit-based grant to a CW member, or members, in memory of longtime CW member Sandra Ogg Rude. This grant is offered for technical and aesthetic innovation related to learning and sharing advanced* weaving techniques.
*Advanced weaving for purposes of this grant is defined as weaving that goes above and beyond. It includes, but is not limited to, in-depth learning or explorations that stretch the limits of current knowledge of techniques or structures, an experimental use of materials to create cloth beyond the scope of current advanced weaving, or teaching of concepts or skills that enable weavers to achieve those goals.
This grant is funded by the Michael and Sandra Ogg Rude Endowment Fund, which was donated to Complex Weavers in 2020. According to Mike Rude,
“The Michael and Sandra Ogg Rude Endowment Fund was established as a legacy in memory of Sandra’s commitment, dedication, and joy in explorations and practice of advanced weaving techniques. Sandra loved to weave and to design complex weavings. She was a very technical weaver, and it was very important to her to further the understanding and use of complex weaving designs. She asked that this fund be established to help encourage the development, study, and sharing of these techniques.”

Eligibility
Any current member of Complex Weavers is eligible to apply for this grant.
Grants will support both learning and teaching projects. Applications for teaching projects and for learning projects will be accepted every year, with each evaluated on its individual merits. Resubmission of a proposal not previously selected is acceptable, as long as the proposal meets the current criteria at the time of the new submission.
Limits and Details
Sandra Ogg Rude Memorial Grants may be awarded annually up to a total amount of $1,000.00. At the jurors’ discretion, that amount may be awarded to one recipient or shared among multiple recipients, but will not exceed $1,000.00 per year.
Recipients of a Sandra Ogg Rude Memorial Grant may not be awarded a second grant until three years after the original grant was awarded.
In a year when no applications are submitted, or no grants are awarded, the grant money will remain in the endowment fund. No money from the fund shall be used for any purposes other than awarding grants to CW members in memory of Sandra Ogg Rude.
Any topic related to advanced weaving may be considered. Financial need is not a consideration.
Costs covered by Grants
Requests for grant funds may include travel costs; materials; space or equipment rental; technology licensing or subscription fees; production costs; etc. Purchases of non-consumable supplies or equipment will not be considered.
Award Review & Selection
The grant applications will be reviewed by a three-person team not affiliated with the Complex Weavers Board of Directors. Jurors may not submit a grant request during the year they serve on the jury.
Grant reviewers will rate applications on the following criteria:
• How well the project speaks to the person’s continued development as an artist, weaver and/or teacher
• How well the project meets the definition of advanced weaving techniques
• The likelihood an applicant will complete the project and fulfill grant requirements
• Feasibility of the project’s proposed budget, supported with true cost estimates
• Expected effectiveness and benefit of method proposed for sharing results of the project
• Benefit to CW members

Three images that illustrate the style and direction of the applicant’s current body of work must be included with application. Images should be jpegs, saved at 300 ppi resolution with a minimum file size of 1 MB and maximum of 2 MB. Label each with your last name_work 1 (2 or 3)_completion date of work shown. eg: Smith_work 1_2021
Project Completion and Reporting
It is expected that the applicant’s class, workshop, or other learning or teaching opportunity will take place during the year following receipt of the grant. Extensions may be considered for projects dependent on a particular conference or event schedule.
Within six months of completion of the proposed project, the awardee will be responsible for reporting back to CW membership their project results, including a summary of theories or techniques learned or taught, and how this project increased the applicant’s individual understanding of advanced weaving and/or that of students.
For all projects, this sharing may consist of a CW Journal article, a recorded slide talk or video presentation shared with CW members, or other approved arrangement.
