Fold, Pucker, Pleat, Shrink: Dimensional Texture in Single Cloth
Dimensionally textured fabric always attracts attention. Puckers, pleats, ruched effects all lead to a tactile connection with cloth, an affinity more than the purely visual. From seersucker, through pleats (in many different ways), waffle, overshot, shibori, sashiko and some surprising sculptural effects brought over from the world of tapestry, many forms of texture can be created. We will look in depth at the different structures, how they can be combined and how materials, shrinkage potential and wet-finishing all impact the results, leading to a wider vocabulary of textural techniques for your weaving.
Though samples will be in Denver, Stacey will be presenting remotely.
This session will be captured for the Weavers Handshake, CW’s online, on-demand learning platform.

Tactile Topography: 3D Texture in Double Cloth and More
Double cloth is a texture weaver’s dream. With two or more layers and mixtures of yarns to play with, this presentation explores six different layered techniques to bring out the best in dimensional texture. Deflected double weave, regular double cloth, stitched double cloth, four-colour (effect) double weave, multiple layers and tubular weaving (including double tubes) all give different effects. We discuss different threading conventions, play with tie-ups to create varied results, and look at finishing techniques to get the most out of your textured fabric. Dive into three-dimensional weaving for surfaces and sculptural effects!
