Patrice is an Associate Professor in Textile Development and Marketing, Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC. Her education includes a B.A., University of Michigan, History of Art, 1970, and an M.A., Fashion and Textile History: Museum Studies, FIT, 2015. Patrice founded Patrice George Designs in 1979, a textile studio in NYC specializing in design for dobby and jacquard woven textiles for the interior textile industry. She has been a consultant to cottage industry and handweaving projects sponsored by UNIDO, CARE, and other NGO’s in Jamaica, Laos, and Mexico.

Fringed, Clipped, Patched, Whiskered: Cut Pile and Clip Spot Weaves
Many exciting fashion textiles, designed with long warp or filling floats, are finished when the floats are cut off-loom to create 3-dimensional pattern effects in the final fabric.
Cut and clipped patterns add color and texture without the excess weight that supplementary warp and weft, or double-faced, weaves require. They often appear in combination with lightweight or sheer woven backgrounds, as in classic dotted Swiss fabric. Clipped patterns are especially appealing when used as accents on scarves, shawls, curtains, and other decorative textiles.
This workshop introduces a wide range of woven fabrics with clipped effects. Examples of weave structures appropriate for clip-spot designs on 8 to 24 shafts will be on hand for examination. Drafts and illustrations of suggested structures for clipped woven designs will be included in the seminar handouts.
