18=Samples were machine washed, removed from the dryer while damp, and pressed dry. Before being ironed, the handtowels were also "mangled" while damp using a marble rolling pin and a granite-topped table.

21=My intent was to design something with curves using the 8-shaft blocks of Division II Park Weave which produces to tag-weave or tag treadling. However, I didn't like my patterns using all 12 blocks so dumped the "center" four (E, F, G, H) and used the rest for a modified tag-weave. The threading, threadling and tie-up are twill-based, with an extra shaft attached to one treadle to reduce a 9-thread float to 7. Both sides of the cloth show curves or I's and O's, depending on your point of view and/or weft color. Before the samples were finished, I perferred the side with shorter floats, but after finishing, I decided the floats on either side wouldn't present a problem for the handtowel I planned to weave with the extra warp on the loom.

23=I initially used 10/2 mercerized cotton as pattern weft, but changed to 5/2 because the size difference worked better in the design. Different colored pattern wefts were used because I wanted to use up the bobbin-stash, and I bore easily. Since the tie-up lends itself to alternative treadling sequences, I was able to weave one handtowel with the same treadling used for the samples and a different sequence for the other towel.

25=The drawdown shows an ergonomic version of a sinking shed tie-up, as well as a traditional tie-up for my jack loom to show both sides of the cloth used for the samples. The ergonomic tie-up is shown for the second towel.

27=It's easy to understand Bateman's threading principles, and the treadling sequences are simple to follow, but beyond a mention that all tie-ups are for sinking sheds, there is no explanation on how he derived them. We are told we can rearrange the tie-up more efficiently, but that's it. Every weaving text I have discusses principles of tie-up for each particular strucure. Not here. I read the monograph more than once, and still don't see a definitive pattern that explains his reasoning. Some tie-ups follow a twill tie-up, but not consistently enough to be a "rule." I may be alone in my confusion, but thank goodness for weaving software and the ability to erase and re-tie. It beats trial-and-error by graph paper hands down.
