Origin of draft: Basic 5 end advancing twill on 8 shafts (in books and articles)
10/2 Tencel, painted warp (green, blue, yellow), black weft. 30 epi, 8" wide warp
240 ends, treadled as drawn in.
Technique, inspiration, etc: "I experimented (on the computer) with a variety
of tie-ups and treadlings. Then sampled several threadings on the loom.
Decided on 'tromp as writ' to get a nice diagonal effect suitable for a narrow
scarf. Added beads to the twisted fringe."

"Origin of Draft for main fabric: I used Fibreworks PCW
and inserted my husband's name into Namedraft. Then I converted the draft
that I got using Block Substitute 'Broken Twill on Weft Twill,' and the result
was the weave structure that I used.
Origin of Draft for tablet woven bands: The weave structure was pebble
weave with tablets. I designed the birds using Pattern Maker for cross
stitch. Some of the birds were based on birds in 'The Unknown Tablet
Weaving,' by Marijke Van Epen. "

"Designed and woven in October and November 2005, the inspiration for this scarf is not
difficult to explain! Groups of maple leaves at each end represent branches or piles
on the ground, from or toward which the single leaves in the center fall. A real maple
leaf was the starting point. It was reproduced many times in three colors:
warp color, weft color, and both colors mixed. It was then inverted, reversed, rotated.
I will give more details about the design steps and structure in the February 2007
issue of the CW Journal.
The structure is 32-shaft Turned Summer and Winter
Warp: 8/2 lyocell, two reds, alternated with 10/2 lyocell, black; 32 epi

"Sedona Shawl"

"The colors in this shawl were inspired by a visit to the Sedona, Arizona home of
another CW member, Linda Sunstad, followed by a 16-day raft trip down the Grand
Canyon in 2005. I watched the colors on red rocks shift in changing light and
wondered if I could create fabric with similar shifting colors. The shapes in the draft
also came from these weather and water-shaped rocks.
The structure is turned taqueté. I began with an extended parallel threading on 24
shafts. An advancing points treadling sequence was used to draw shapes reminiscent
of sandstone cliffs and rocks. The tie-up was modified to include some surface
decoration which alters the normally smooth surface of turned taqueté. These
decorations are evident as the light falls from certain angles, giving the changing
colors I sought. The yellow weft provides the sunlight glow and brings out the warm
tones in one warp layer.
Threading and treadling are non-repeating and were designed for this piece.
Warp: 30/2/4 Lyocell Tencel from Textura Trading Co. in "aster purple" and
10/2 Lyocell Tencel from Textura Trading Co. dyed in dyepots before weaving,
using Procion MX dyes, mainly orange, red, and rust. Sett: 40 epi
Weft: 20/2 cotton, yellow , about 30 ppi
"Christmas Cheer"

My "Christmas Cheer" hand towels were woven as gifts this
past holiday for family, friends and business associates. I was excited
about this project because I put on my longest warp ever using my new
sectional beam and AVL warping wheel. I wound on a 48-yard warp that
was 24-inches wide and used 10/2 mercerized white cotton. I never tired of
weaving these towels because I loved my 14-harness twill which used 10/2
red and green 10/2 mercerized cotton weft. This was also my first opportunity
to use a temple that a friend of mine said I would love to hate. She was right.
I hated how often I had to move the temple but loved the results of my even
selvages. I am honored to be recognized by Complex Weavers for my weaving;
this has been a proud accomplishment for me.

4 shaft deflected double weave scarf in silk
Adapted from "Katies Colorful Coat" Weavers # 44,
pages 60-61. The original was a child's wool coat in black and bright colors.
I adapted the draft, fiber, colors, and sett to make a silk scarf.
Fiber - 18/2 silk in light and dark turquoise and lavendar.
epi 24, ppi ~24.
Structure: deflected double weave.
As usual, inspiration was driven by necessity. I needed to weave something
in silk to demonstrate at the Japanese Festival and the Missouri Botanical
Gardens (St Louis) but wanted to try something different. I found this
child's coat in Weavers and thought it was interesting that it was deflected
double weave on 4 shafts instead of 8 or more and thought I'd try it and see
how it worked. Most of the scarf was woven as a large crowd of people
moved past the loom and the Japanese Festival. Because of the crowd, I
cut the weft after each color rather than carry the yarn up the selvedge.
