Seminar 535
Saturday PM
"Peter and Gustav"
Barbara is an HGA Master Weaver and member of Northwest Designer Craftsmen. Currently much of her work involves interpreting weave structures in ply- splitting. She has taught weaving and ply-split braiding workshops and seminars in the US, England, Canada, and New Zealand. Her scarves and ply-split pieces have been exhibited internationally, and two of her pieces are the only examples of ply-splitting in Lark Books 500 Baskets. She has written numerous articles for Complex Weavers Journal, Weavezine, The Journal for Weavers, Spinners & Dyers, Handwoven, Weaver's, and SS&D.  Her website can be found at www.barbarajwalker.com

Peter Collingwood brought ply-split braiding to fiber enthusiasts with his comprehensive book, The Techniques of Ply-Split Braiding. Gustav Hermann Oelsner's A Handbook of Weaves is a staple in the libraries of most Complex Weavers. Suppose the two gentlemen bridged time and met for dinner. Imagine their conversation… This seminar introduces ply splitting from drawdowns and proves that, even if you suffer from shaft envy, you can enjoy Oelsner's multishaft drafts and put them to use in ply-split designs. Various weave structures and their potential for re-interpretation in ply splitting will be discussed. Techniques will be demonstrated, and many examples will be shown. You may choose to begin a small sample if you supply your own materials and have prior ply-split braiding experience.
